Rif Mountains – an adventure in the “Blue Heart” of Morocco
Why visit the Reef?
The Rif Mountains stand out with their unique mix of mountain peaks, peaceful valleys, and proximity to the Mediterranean Sea. This region offers:
Charming Chefchaouen (“The Blue Town”)
Talassemtane National Park with ancient cedars and rare monkeys
Akshur Claws (God’s Bridge) and Crystal Pools
Mediterranean beaches near El Jebha
Best time to visit
Spring (April–June): Flowering, moderate temperatures (15–25 °C).
Autumn (September–October): Greater chance of clear skies and golden autumn foliage.
Summer: There is a risk of high temperatures and crowds on the beaches.
Winter: The higher areas may have snow, but the valleys remain accessible.
Main attractions
1. Chefchaouen – the city painted in sky blue
At the very foot of the Rif, the city of Chefchaouen captivates you with its blue walls, streets full of handmade souvenirs, and local charm. Don’t miss:

2. Talassemtane National Park
UNESCO-listed park with deep gorges, forest trails and home to Barbary apes. Ideal for a full-day hiking tour:

3. Akshur and “God’s Bridge”
Just 30 km from Chefchaouen, this natural wonder is famous for its stone bridge over clear caldera pools. It’s best to go early in the morning to avoid crowds and have a picnic by the water.

After your mountain adventure, relax on the beach in El Jebha. Fresh seafood at local restaurants and the colors of the sunset over the water create the perfect end to the day.
Practical advice
How do I get there? From Tangier there are direct buses and taxis to Chefchaouen (≈ 2 hrs.).
Day trips: Organized tours with a local guide (especially to Talassemtane and Akshur).
Accommodation: Guest houses (riads) in Chefchaouen offer a traditional atmosphere and homemade food.
Safety: Region with low crime, but we advise caution on pedestrian paths and traffic on small roads.
